Women's Studies Forum with the theme of "New Views, Thoughts and Development", was held in Changchun, capital of northeast Jilin Province, on December 27.
Professor Li Hongxiang, from the Center for Women's Studies at Jilin University, and other experts gave a series of speeches around second-child and employment, women and media, women and social organizations and other topics.
On the issues of discrimination by employers on the grounds of sex, around 11.3 percent of respondents said they had had such experiences, said Professor Li, according to a survey of 1,010 interviewees from across Jilin Province.
Nearly 2.5 percent of female respondents said they are not free to get married or have a baby, due to the terms of their recruitment contracts that they signed with their employers, said the report.
In regard to setting higher hiring standards for female candidates, 41.1 percent of those surveyed don't realize that there is not equality between men and women and 23.2 percent have no idea what gender equality is. Only 35.7 percent of interviewees are aware of gender discrimination.
Professor Li appealed to the government to formulate special laws as soon as possible to ensure women's legal rights of employment, with a view to protecting them from various infringements.
In addition, Li advised them to amend existing laws on the provisions of maternal leave. He said that paternity leave and corresponding allowances should be provided for men as well.
In this way, gender costs for employers hiring a man or a woman will tend to be equal and the consciousness of gender equality will be improved as well.
In the end, Li suggested that the country's maternity insurance should be jointly shared by the government, employers and laborers themselves.
