Abstract:George Eliot's historic fiction Romola, juxtaposes Christian faith and Pagan liberalism in two perspective spaces. Romola moves from Greek scholar's library, to Catholic Church, to Florence city streets and then to the Heterotopia island. This expansion in the outer space echoes Romola's gender emancipation, her acceptance of secular Christianity and her growing sympathy towards the Other.
