Abstract:In the 1980s, Chen Ruoxi created a series of novels called Breakthrough, Vision, Er Hu and Paper Marriage to explore the overseas Chinese female spiritual world via stories on marriage and love. Chen created images of women struggling with culture shock as immigrants to the United States. Most had to abandon their patriarchal notions of love and marriage, and choose to live independently with dignity to so achieve self-reliance. This paper argues that such anidentity stemmed from discarding Chinese traditional culture to achieve integration into a more Western equivalent.
