Masculine Anxiety in The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber

Abstract：In Hemingway's short story The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber,the protagonist Macomber is undoubtedly a typical man who lacks masculinity. In the story there are a lot of details showing his masculine anxiety and crisis. This paper,based on Cornell's three- fold model of the structure of gender and Bourdieu's understanding of masculinity in Masculine Domination,delves into the origin of the hero’s masculine anxiety and crisis from the perspective of power relations, production relationship,and the male violence.
